Spring Meeting

Technical Service is Customer Service
TSRT Spring Meeting
March 22, 2013 — 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Mahoney State Park,
Peter Kiewit Lodge, Nebraska Room

Schedule

Registration and Welcome — 8:30 am-9:00 am.
Session 1 — 9:00 am-9:50 am — “What Did You Do With ALL of Our Journals?” Presented by Rebecca Bernthal, Love Library, University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and Sally Gibson, Reinert Alumni Library, Creighton University.
Libraries often address space issues by weeding collections or relocating materials to off-site storage.  While several factors are involved in the decision making process, a primary consideration is minimizing the negative impact on patrons.  Both the Reinert Alumni Library and UNL’s University Libraries are involved in large scale weeding projects.  Hear about their planning and decision making processes, and how the decisions each library made were driven by keeping the customer first.
Session 2 — 10:00 am-10:50 am –”Communicating from the Backroom: Hands-On Customer Service.” Presented by Heather Buckwalter, Klutznick Law Library, Creighton University; Casey Kralik, Bellevue University Library; & Jennifer Sorensen, Bellevue University Library.
Many Technical Services staff members do not believe they provide a public service simply because they do not sit at a public service point. The presenters would like to show you how they provide services to faculty and patrons even from the Backroom. We have all seen changes concerning interactions between faculty and technical services staff, specifically with collection development and acquisitions of print and electronic materials. We will discuss some of the initiatives and efforts put forth to keep a working relationship between library and faculty including introductions, orientations, presentation of online collection building tools and our plans for follow-up.
Session 3 — 11:00 am-11:50 am — Lightning Rounds (brief presentations with time for discussion)
“Free like a Kitten (only better because it’s REALLY free): JTAcq, Jim Taylor’s Acquisitions Software.” Presented by Laura England-Biggs, Keene Memorial Library.
Jim Taylor has been developing third-party library software for many years to perform all kinds of functions from acquisitions to email to url checking. This particular software, JTAcq, makes it easy to create lists, check holdings and create purchase orders without having to fire up the ILS.  You can even open the request form up to patrons.
“RDA Practice Workbook.” Presented by Margaret Mering, UNL.
Members of the Nebraska RDA (Resource Description and Access) Practice Group are creating a RDA practice workbook. The workbook is aimed at smaller libraries. It will be published by ABC-Clio. The presenter will discuss the process of creating the workbook and deciding what to include in the workbook.
“Making Sense of Leveled Readers for Simpler Ordering and Cataloging.” Presented by Laura England-Biggs, Keene Memorial Library.
Anyone who has tried to organize a collection of Leveled Readers knows the challenge.  Each company uses their own system of labeling their product – and there’s no easy way to make sense of it all unless you want to memorize a complex system like Fountas and Pinnell, Lexile, etc.  For those of us who don’t have that kind of time… what to do?  This system – still a work in progress –  tells acquisitions and catalogers where to place a book in OUR collection based on the publisher-assigned level.
Lunch — 12:00 pm-1:30 pm.
Soup-and-salad buffet on site. Included with pre-registration.
Session 4 — 1:30 pm-2:20 pm — “Technically At Your Service:  Streamlining the Acquisitions Process Through Outsourcing and Other Practices.” Presented by Laura England-Biggs, Keene Memorial Library, and Jake Rundle, Hastings Public Library.
Staff changes (through layoffs, retirements, etc) are driving a lot of libraries to look at their workflow and implement changes.  How can we best utilize the resources available to us – both personnel and monetary?  In this session, you’ll hear from two libraries who have chosen to outsource the lion’s share of their copy cataloging and processing, freeing staff for other duties and projects.
TSRT Business Meeting — 2:30 pm-3:30 pm.
Directions to Mahoney State Park
Admittance to Mahoney State Park requires a Nebraska State Park permit. If you do not have a park permit, you may purchase a one-day entrance permit from park officials at the gate for $5.
