Meg Mering presented “RDA: the new cataloging code” to 35 attendees on Thursday. She covered answers to these questions and more.

• What is RDA?
• What are the conceptual models?
• When was RDA published?
• Who is currently testing it?
• When will we see analysis and results?
• Why transcribe and eliminate abbreviations?

Dr. Sheila Siegler presented “History of the Book…the Story Continues” to 30 attendees also on Thursday. Questions she covered in her session includes:

• What is the difference between parchment and paper?
• What is a deckle and how does it relate to deckle-edged paper?
• Why is/was it called “uppercase” and “lowercase” letters?
• Do you have the patience and time to sew a book’s binding?
• How was gold inlaid into the spine?
• Have artist’s ever created paintings on the edges of a book?
• How many times must you fold a paper to get an octavo fold? Why is it important to know how a page fold’s together when printing?

Laura England presented “Migration Tips and Tricks” on Friday to 8 attendees and covered such questions as:

• Why choose Software as a Service (SaaS)?
  • Increased energy efficiency, portability (can log in from anywhere)
• What is a reasonable amount of time for implementation?
• Should you think about the data/catalog? Consider inventory.
• Should you consider testing how an upgrade is handled?
• Should you negotiate for a test/training database for the SaaS?
• Why is it important to talk to others who have done this before?
• Is it important to back up your data and customizations?
• What survives migration?
