What is Linked Data and What Does It Mean for Libraries?

Emily Nimsakont, Nebraska Library Commission

It has been predicted that beyond the person-to-person interaction of Web 2.0 will be interaction between data in the Semantic Web. How can libraries be involved in this new world of information exchange? One answer to this question is: by transforming their bibliographic data into Linked Data, which can then be linked to           information from other web resources. Attend this    session to learn the basic concepts of Linked Data, how data from libraries can be integrated with other data on the Web, and what this could mean for the future of  libraries and their catalogs.

Imagining a Smithsonian Commons

I’m back from Computers in Libraries 2009 and I’ve got a lot to share. The first is Wednesday’s keynote talk from Michael Edson, Director of Web and New Media Strategy at the Smithsonian Institution. It was streamed live online (a first for CIL) and was recorded. Listen to him and then go read all the books he mentions in his talk. (I’ve read all but one of them and I’m on the list at LCL for it now.)

Online TV Shows by Ustream

He also put up a text version of his presentation in SlideShare. I’ve embedded it here for you.

(Unofficial) NLA/NEMA 2009 Call for Presentations

image The process is just getting started and the forms aren’t available yet but I just wanted to put the bug in your ear that we need presentations for the 2009 NLA/NEMA conference. This year’s conference will be held in La Vista, NE October 28-30th. Have you got an idea? Just leave a note in the comments and I’ll get back to you. Others of you will be hearing from me directly. You know who you are ;-)
